NANO: ALBANIA NEEDS INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT, BUT AS A SOVEREIGN DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY

THE ALBANIAN PRIME MINISTER REBUTS THE PRESS’S “PROTECTORATE” Our initiative was explained better yesterday during an interview with the Italian newspaper “La Republica” by the Deputy Prime Minister, government coordinator Bashkim Fino. Albanians have nothing to do with a protectorate or with a “governor”. Albanians have their own government, elected in the 29 June elections. They do not need economic, financial, or political aid, but assistance cannot go beyond what is granted to other countries as well. This view is strongly reaffirmed by the Prime Minister of Albania, Fatos Nano, in an interview he gave yesterday to the Italian newspaper “Corriere della sera”, which today is published in abridged form under the title “La Albania ha bisogno di appoggio economico e politico, non de protectorato”. The villages and towns of Albania with the European Community are being built according to the demands of Albanians and not of foreigners. In this context, he also speaks about the role and the propaganda message of the opposition. “The opposition,” he said, “is making a monumental mistake. It is trying to frighten the situation with hints of unrest. They hint at it in every newspaper in the world. In reality, local incidents do occur, but only because of certain groups of terrorists in the north. This does not mean that we have descended into anarchy. Above all, there is a need for calm, and, for example, the agreement with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank helps in this direction”.
